How to baby on a budget!

Having a baby can seem like a daunting and huge financial commitment! When I fell pregnant I found myself extremely overwhelmed by everything we actually needed for this tiny human!

Although we are pretty good at saving and reasonably sensible with our money I could not believe how much we would be expected to spend on just the essentials!image

I have to say I am quite a tight ass when it comes to money and have really found, as I did when we got married, that you label ‘baby’ or ‘wedding’ on something and the price seems to double! We were looking at paying more for our babies pram than I did on my first car!

Although we could quite comfortably afford to do all of this and family had been amazing offering to help out wherever we need I felt the need to share where we have managed to save money and how we did it!

Buying second hand

I have always been a bargain hunter! There are so many great sites available online now to buy great second hand items, Facebook sale sites, gumtree and eBay to name a few! I have even purchased baby clothes on Instagram! Basically, don’t be fooled by high street prices, do some research and you could buy better quality items for a chunk of the price second hand! Items have usually been looked after really well and you may even have friends or family members that have items they no longer have use for! We have managed to save a fortune buying second hand on some of our bigger items, including our Cotbed and Isofix!

Baby events

Every now and again the big supermarkets have discounted baby events, you can pick up anything from nappies to breast pumps at really reduced prices! We have stocked up on essentials like nappies, wipes and bath time essentials at events like this and have saved a lot of money! Buying in bulk at these sorts of events can save a lot in the long run!

Sensible spending

It is so easy to over spend on a baby, especially a first baby, as you really have no idea what you and your baby will actually need! There is so much on the market now, sleeping tools like the Sleepyhead and Next to me cribs, Grow bags, White noise machines- the list goes on! This isn’t only a trend for sleeping, everything baby related seems to have a ton of overpriced ‘essentials’ that you need yet our parents managed fine without ! We have really tried to stick to basics for now, perhaps as and when he arrives we may find we need to purchase extra things to help us along but that’s what next day delivery is for! What I’m trying to say is, I think if you buy all the basics and if you feel like something might help to give you a better nights sleep then by all means do it, but wait until your baby arrives as for all you know they might be quite happy with basic!image

We would have spent a fortune if I hadn’t have done just a few of these simple things, I really do believe we have managed so well at budgeting for our first baby! The temptation to over- spend is crazy but let’s be honest they aren’t going to know wether your car isofix was brand new or not! Don’t be afraid to buy second hand, you are likely to get better quality for your money and buy in bulk when the deals are around! Stick to basics to begin with as its crazy how many second hand items I see that people are selling for half what they paid because their baby didn’t like or didn’t use it !

Hurry up now baby, we’re ready for you!

My Baby Shower

I am now 35 weeks pregnant !

I have been on Maternity Leave now just over a week and have already had such a great time! Catching up with friends , finishing our nursery and of course my Bany Shower!

My shower couldn’t have gone more perfectly! My vision was for a beautiful sunny day in a picturesque garden with an Alice in Wonderland style tea party! I have to say we did a pretty good job!

I rented out a local community centre garden , the sun shone and we had an abundance of cakes, tea and pink lemonade! I picked up loads of pretty decor, gold spotted cups, striped straws and even a tissue paper garland! Everything came together so well and looked super pretty on the day!

I had the help of my mother in law who organised games and made sure the day flowed perfectly!

Here are a few of my favourite snaps from the day!

34 weeks| Fat feet & sleepless nights

imageWow.

Where have the last four weeks gone !?

They tell you that the last bit goes really fast & to enjoy every minute of alone time, I can confirm it sure does!

What no-one told me was that my last few precious weeks of sleep would be disturbed by leg cramps, the urge to pee 100+ times a night and the realisation that sleeping on your side is NOT compfy. I have tried many different positions with pillows, towels, blankets and nothing seems to be giving me an amazing nights sleep! Also, someone forgot to mention that my feet would soon resemble an elephants! Heads up, it’s not a good idea to start trying on new summer sandals, unless you want to buy a pair two sizes too big …

As of now, I have started my maternity leave! Hallelujah! My job in maternity is very full on and the long days mean I have finished nice and early to give myself some much needed rest and ‘feet up time’. I’m hoping to nest around the house and finish a few odd jobs, read a book or two in the garden and eat plenty of tea and cake! My hubby and I have decided to go to the cinema as much as we can too, it’s one of our favourite things to do and we know it may be a while before we get to go again! Plenty of popcorn and fanta ice blasts for me and bump 🙂

I’m sure the next 6 weeks will fly by and before I know it I will be meeting my little man for the first time!

30 weeks | Nursery & getting prepared!

So, I’m now 30 weeks pregnant ! 🙂

After a rough couple of weeks feeling ill I am finally feeling more myself again!

Our nursery is being painted and our wallpaper is going on this week! I am so pleased we are finally doing it as I can start to sort through and organise all our purchases and gifts and get everything organised! Plus buying and accessorising the nursery has been something I have really been looking forward to since I found out I was pregnant- I have been a bit Pinterest crazy!

I am also starting to buy little bits and bobs for my hospital stay and for after baby! I bought the most amazing soft bottoms from GAP for after baby is born, they are super comfy and will be great for lounging around the house or even for popping out and about! I also bought some lovely PJs from Sainbury’s, they have a button up top, perfect for breastfeeding and comfy pajama bottoms that match! Popping these in my hospital bag ready for the big day!

Its all starting to feel very real now, I’m thinking more about labour and what to expect when he arrives ! My bump has all of a sudden ‘popped’ and I feel really pregnant, aches, pains and swollen feet included!

The countdown is on – 10 weeks to go!

Honey & Lemon

image.jpgWhat a week;

I am now 29 weeks pregnant and feeling it. The last week has not been my finest, I came down with the most horrible cold which basically left me in bed all week.

A cold in pregnancy isn’t like any other cold because unfortunately most cold & flu medicine is not suitable to take in pregnancy! Consequently I lived on Honey & Lemon all week!

I forgot to mention, I am a terrible ill person. Lounging around in bed all day, smelling and feeling sorry for myself really isn’t how I like to spend my time. When I wasn’t sleeping I was blowing my nose, coughing and spluttering or drinking Honey & Lemon, that’s if I could be bothered to get out of bed to make any!

Anyways, I’m not trying to make everyone feel sorry for me, just warning everyone to take extra care of themselves in pregnancy and not over do it! I am the worst at knowing when I just need to stop and relax! This cold has certainly taught me a valuable lesson!

This week so far has still been tough, although I mostly feel better I have very little energy so am remaining at a slower pace and taking it steady!

Roll on week 30!

🙂

The Second Trimester

image

I am now 28 weeks and offically in my Third Trimester ! I have really enjoyed the Second Trimester , I left my sickness behind and was greeted with a bout of energy, enthusiasm and excitement ! I really recommend seeing friends, having an extra date night or two with your other half and evening travelling if you have the energy to do so!

I am really pleased with what we have achieved so far, but still feel we have a lot left to do before his arrival! In the last few months before he arrives we are planning on finishing the nursery, stocking up on all the essentials, nappies, washing powder and food and we are even going to cook and freeze some meals so we don’t live off microwave meals and McDonald’s once he arrives !

The third trimester also means I don’t have long left at work – yay- I can start planning my baby shower and am really excited to have some well deserved rest and relaxation!

Any comments, tips and advice on the third trimester would be massively appreciated!

Thanks for reading!
